The Gippsland Lakes Provide a Diverse Fishing Experience

Fishing is a very exciting experience, however you choose to enjoy it. Try fishing for a variety of species using any of the following methods:

  • Lake fishing - Bring your own boat or hire one, or fish from the shore or the numerous public jetties. Common catches include flathead, garfish, tailor (which you may know as skipjack), mullet, luderick and bream. Speak to the locals or check the newspapers for recent fishing reports.

  • River fishing - With many rivers to choose from, including the Mitchell, Tambo, Nicholson, and further inland the Bundarra, Cobungra or Mitta River, it can be difficult to know where to start! Try your hand at fly fishing for a new experience. Bream, mullet and flathead are most commonly caught in the rivers.

  • Surf fishing - A 10 minute boat trip from your private jetty at Captains Cove will have you experiencing the thrill of surf fishing from beautiful 90 Mile Beach. Cast a line out into the ocean and see how you fare. You can expect salmon, trevally, snapper, and maybe even a shark!

  • Ocean fishing charter - Head out to deeper waters on a skippered charter to try your hand at catching some big, exciting game fish. Fish for marlin, tuna, and sharks, and enjoy a beautiful day out on the big blue ocean.

If you're unsure about what bait is the best to use for the season or region you're fishing in, ask around at the local fishing shops - our fridndly reception staff will be only too happy to help you. At Captains Cove we can provide you with cruising maps and tourism information seven days a week to make your fishing experience successful.
